Day by Day
Day 1
Arrival in Lima, transfer to hotel,
Overnight at Ramada Costa del Sol ****
Day 2
Morning fly to Puerto Maldonado, where we will spend some time birding around the town for birds like the Purus Jacamar, White-tailed Kite and other open habitat birds. A one-hour boat trip brings us to the Sandoval dock, from where we will slowly bird our way on a 2.7 km walk to the Sandoval Lake Lodge, while our luggage is taken by cart to the lodge. The final stretch to the lake we will do on a catamaran. Overnight at Sandoval Lake Lodge.

Day 3
We will spend one early morning in the flooded forest on the other side of the lake where our highlight will be the Black-faced Cotinga. Then we spend some relaxing time in a catamaran exploring the shores for Hoatzin, herons, canopy and fly over birds. The afternoon will be spent on the trail system through terra firme behind the lodge. Overnight at Sandoval lake Lodge.

Day 4
An early morning bird-walk will take us back to the port on the Madre de Dios River for our 7 hour trip to Pampas del Heath. The first hours are on the large Madre de Dios River, but soon we will enter the small but exquisite Heath river. The border between Peru and Bolivia. This pretty river has mostly sand banks and plenty of waterbirds, but also lots of opportunities for overflying birds. A good place to spot jaguars for example. We will arrive at the lodge in the late afternoon.

Day 5
The first morning will be set aside to visit the macaw clay lick where a specially designed blind will allow spectacular views. Some say this clay lick has the best setting of all known collpas. In the afternoon we will visit an oxbow lake for waterbidrs and fores edge birds that we can see from a catamaran. On our way to this attractions we will have another chance to bird along the shores of the Heath river. Overnight at Heath River Wildlife Center.

Day 6
Dawn will be spending in terra firme forest on the trail system in search of mixed flocks. In the afternoon we will walk to the Pampas where we will be birding until sunset. Dinner will be served in our camp where we will spend the night. Overnight at Heath River Wildlife Center.

Day 7
Early in the morning we will spend most of the time in the platform, where we will have breakfast while we look for the pampas birds. Overnight at Heath River Wildlife Center.

Day 8
Another day spend in the trail system for terra firme birds. Overnight at Heath River Wildlife center.

Day 9
Short dawn birding on the trail system and early start to Puerto Maldonado. Overnight at Cabana Quinta Hotel***.

Day 10
Early trip to the grasslands around the airport for some birds like the White-tailed Kite, Pearl Kite as well as some seedeaters. Domestic flight to Lima. Overnight at Sonesta Posada del Inca El Olivar*****.

Important: Though we have never heard of anyone contracting yellow
fever anywhere in Peru or neighboring countries, Peru nevertheless
requires a current yellow fever vaccination for trips to the rainforest
regions. This vaccination is usually required for all rainforest
regions around the world.
